Connecting with Fijian Life

Share a Kava Ceremony

We don't know what we expected a kava ceremony to be like, but it wasn't this. Sitting cross-legged with village elders, you’ll drink kava, a mildly sedative drink made from the roots of the yaqona plant, served in coconut shells. The ceremony is a tradition in Fiji, from the clap-drink-clap ritual to the storytelling that follows. It's part of most village tours you can join in Fiji, and even though it's an acquired taste we recommend doing so, as it’s one of the best ways to connect with Fijians. Hey, they might even share tales of their ancestors and teach you about their daily life on the islands.

Spend Time on the Water

Life in Fiji revolves around the ocean and rivers, and there’s no better way to experience the islands than getting out on the water. Historically the best option would be a drua—a traditional double-hulled canoe with a platform connecting the two sides, topped by a triangular sail. Once used for long voyages between the islands, these canoes are a marvel of Fijian craftsmanship. While there's only a few drua's still in operation today, there are other possibilities of sailing the polynesian waters, in spirit of the ancient seafarers. Check out the options here!

Learn Traditional Meke Dance

Meke is a traditional dance that tells stories through chanting, clapping, and smooth, rhythmic movements, usually set to the beat of drums or bamboo instruments. It’s an amazing way to see Fiji’s history and culture come alive through dance. Some villages even offer workshops where you can join in and learn a few moves yourself. Don't worry if you're not sure you got the moves—it’s all about having fun and connecting with the locals.

Some of our Favourite Adventures in Fiji

Island-Hopping Like a Pro

The Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands are undeniably beautiful, but staying in one place means you’re missing out. With a Bula Pass, you can hop between islands on a flexible schedule, allowing you to explore remote beaches, tiny villages, and snorkeling spots that aren’t overrun by tourists. Look for islands with basic beachside bures (bungalows) if you’re after a rustic vibe.

Free Dive or Snorkel the Beqa Lagoon

The Beqa Lagoon is legendary for its soft coral reefs and abundance of marine life. For a budget-friendly adventure, sign up for a snorkel tour, or take a a freediving class. Alternatively, there are loads of diving possibilities if you do want to get your Padi certificate, or want to improve on it by taking the advance course. DIY Waterfall Hunting

Fiji’s rainforests hide some incredible waterfalls that are perfect for adventurers willing to trek off the beaten path. Taveuni’s Bouma Falls is the most famous, but smaller, lesser-known waterfalls like Navua Gorge or the Waisali Rainforest Reserve offer a more secluded experience. Some require a guide or an entrance fee, so come prepared with cash and a good pair of hiking shoes.
