Packing list - what to bring
The essentials
- The backpack itself
- A small daypack for shorter daytrips and exploring cities
- A compact rainproof cover to protect your backpack when it rains and for dirty airplane cargo holds
- A pair of comfy hiking shoes or boots
- A compact first-aid kit with pain killers, band-aids and the like
- Your standard toiletries (sunscreen, toothpaste, etc.)
- Flip flops (both for sunny destinations and hostel showers)
- Copies of all your valuable documents; passport, tickets, vouchers and important phone numbers.
- Flashlight
- Travel adapter (check if you need one for your destination)
- A light hat, cap or other head cover
- A rain jacket, poncho or small umbrella
- Swiss army knife or similar tool
- A quick dry towel or beach towel (they do have towel service at most hostels)
With these things in your bag you'll get along fine most places. And then we'll leave it up to your vanity to decide how much clothing you want to bring along. We do advise you to bring mostly comfortable clothes that are easy to dess up or down. It's good to be prepared for all kinds of weather, especially when travelling for a longer amount of time, and don't forget swimwear!
It could be handy to buy one or a few sets of packing cubes to sort the clothes and accessories in your backpack and keep it organised. This way, you can unpack and repack your backpack in a jiffy (perfect for small rooms and tight hostel spaces) and you'll less crinkled clothes to deal with. IKEA sells some good ones for next to nothing.
Pack only the necessities
You may consider other items to bring (or not to bring) depending on your destinations. When staying at backpacker hostels and other simple accommodation, a compact sleeping bag and a travel towel (dry fast) will come in handy. Same goes for a water bottle when traveling in warm countries and light weight camping gear (plastic plate/bowl/knife/fork/spoon) if you plan to do a lot of outdoor activities. Mosquito repellent are advisable for some regions of the world, however it's often best to buy them locally. Avoid bringing bulky stuff like hairdryers, they usually have them at hostels and they take up way too much space in your backpack that's better spent on bringing a camera, powerbank and for example a hoodie. Consider a backpacker trip as a unique experience - it's not supposed to resemble life at home with all your everyday requirements!
